Coastal Management Projects

Green Coast

In this project we work with local communities to restore and manage coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, sand dunes and coral reefs. Restoring coastal ecosystems improves coastal resilience and provides the basis for improved livelihoods in tsunami-affected regions.

Support for the Ramsar Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP)

This project manages a global website as a communications tool for specialists on the Scientific and Technical Review Panel of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
This project is being carried out at a global level.

Natural wetlands study and Education Centre development, Nimbo/Cixi

This project aims to reduce degradation of marine ecosystems by scaling up investment in reducing land-based pollution, designating wetlands and proposing coastal management options.

Tg. Piai coastal hydrology

This project studies the effects of restoration on coastal hydrology at Tg. Piai (Ramsar site). The reports will help managers administer and preserve the natural environment of this Ramsar site and take steps to ensure the safety and protection of wildlife and plants.

Roebuck Plains management planning (Australia)

This project will prepare a plan that will guide the managers of Roebuck Plains Station in maintaining the natural heritage of the property and its wetlands.

A condition assessment of wetlands and waterbirds of Shoalwater Bay Training Area (Queensland, Australia)

This project aims to assess the condition of intertidal wetlands (including migratory shorebird populations), freshwater swamps and streams in the internationally important Shoalwater Bay wetlands, to recommend any management responses, and propose appropriate monitoring of condition.

Great Barrier Reef Coastal Wetlands Program: reference group (Australia)

This is a pilot project to improve water quality in the lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef and protect wetland biodiversity. Wetlands International provided a member on the Minister-appointed panel to advise and make recommendations on proposed wetland restoration projects for sites in the catchment of the Great Barrier Reef.

Black Sea Regional Initiative: Establishing the foundations for the launch of a Black Sea Regional Initiative for the wise use of coastal wetlands (BlackSeaWet)

This project aims to enhance the conservation and sustainable development of the Black Sea coastal wetlands. It will establish the foundations for a regional wetlands initiative that will underpin future wetland conservation efforts.

Support to NRM regional bodies and wetland managers across Australia in recognition and management of important wetlands

Support to NRM (natural resource management) regional bodies and wetland managers across Australia in recognition and management of important wetlands.

This three year project will support priority, remote NRM regions across Australia in terms of their important wetland (Ramsar, Directory and shorebird site) assets. Working closely with the regional bodies, WIO will transfer skills on recognition and management of these assets through one-to-one, on-site consultation at regional centres and important wetland sites.

Development of information tools on wetland biodiversity and management in Australia

Current work by Wetlands International on development of information tools includes a suite of guidelines and factsheets for Queensland organisations that are promoting wetland management and significant wetland species.

Coastal management publications

Invisible Connections

This book and its wonderful photographs by Jan van de Kam bring to life the dramatic journeys of migratory shorebirds in the East Asian – Australasian Flyway, the importance of their staging sites and the need for international cooperation to maintain this cycle.

Best Practice Guidelines on Restoration of Mangroves in Tsunami Affected Areas

Mangroves as an ecosystem are capable of performing certain functions or environmental services. Mangrove plants produce organic matter through photosynthesis and this produces the food for most of the fish and shellfish in the coastal waters. Fish and shrimp catches increase with the increasing presence of mangroves in the inter-tidal zone.
