Information sheet for the EU on palm oil & peatlands

This paper shines light on the issue of greenhouse gas emissions due to conversion of areas with peatsoils for vegetable oil production including for biodiesel. The paper will focus on palm oil in Southeast Asia; the most relevant area for vegetable oil production on peatlands, with alarming greenhouse gas emissions as a result.

The palm oil company employee has his pockets filled with dollars, stating "We plant oil palm to save the climate, and get REDD and biofuels subsidies".

The Global Peatland Fund flyer

This the flyer of the Global Peatland Fund, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by rehabilitating degraded peatlands – especially peatswamp rainforests in Southeast Asia. Peatland rehabilitation and conservation are extremely cost effective carbon mitigation options (US$7 to US$17 per tonne of CO2).

Wetlands International has a long standing history in investigating the role of wetlands in relation to water provision and supplies, flood pervention and increasing coastal resilience to extreme weather events. This factsheet on this role of wetlands in adapting to climate change was made for the UNFCCC Climate Talks in Bonn, June 2009.

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Europe: the risks associated with wild birds

The infection of wild birds by highly pathogenic strains of avian influenza (AI) virus was virtually unknown – apart from one instance of the disease appearing in common terns in South Africa in 1961 – before the Asian strain of highly pathogenic AI virus (AIV), H5N1, began to expand across the world. Outbreaks of clinical disease in Eurasia have resulted in visible mortality among populations of free-ranging wild birds in a multitude of species.

Best Practice Guidelines on Restoration of Mangroves in Tsunami Affected Areas

Mangroves as an ecosystem are capable of performing certain functions or environmental services.

Mangrove plants produce organic matter through photosynthesis and this produces the food for most of the fish and shellfish in the coastal waters.

Odessa-2000 Declaration

Declaration was adopted during the workshop "Conservation, restoration and wise-use of wetlands and wetland resources along the Black Sea coast", held on 26-27 September 2000 in Odessa, Ukraine by 35 regional and international wetland and waterbird experts representing wetland conservation organisations in Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and United Kingdom. Participans discussed future co-operation in the field of conservation, restoration and sustainable use of wetlands along the coast of the Black and Azov Seas.

The ‘ROM Bulletin’ is a brief publication produced immediately after the counts as a reference tool; it gives count areas, bird numbers and names of counters.
