UN Climate Talks in Bonn (29 March-8 April 2009)

The year 2009 is a crucial year in the international effort to address climate change, culminating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, 7-18 December. In 2007, Parties agreed to shape an ambitious and effective international response to climate change, to be agreed at Copenhagen. The first round of negotiations this year took place in Bonn, 29 March-8 April This is the first of about 12 weeks of negotiations in 2009; at least four further sessions will be held prior to Copenhagen: 1-12 June in Bonn; 10-14 August in Bonn; 28 September-9 October in Bangkokand 2-6 November (location tbc).

Wetlands International was present in the first Bonn meeting this year with the following objectives:

  • Accounting of peatland emissions under the Kyoto second commitment period (preferably mandatory)
  • For any REDD policy: inclusion of soil-carbon including deforested peatlands
  • Options for developed countries to reduce emissions by addressing peatland degradation (incl. non-forested peatands) in developing countries
  • Promoting Strategic Impact Asessments (SEA's) and the importance of wetland ecosystems in any guidance document on adaptation under a new climate agreement.
  •

UN Climate meeting puts huge emissions from peatland loss on agenda

Bonn, Germany. The enormous carbon dioxide emissions from degraded peatlands have finally become an integral part of the UNFCCC agenda. An impressive list of countries have pleaded for inclusion of these so far ignored emissions in national emission accounting in developed countries (Annex I).

At 2 April 2009 the Ecosystems Climate Alliance (ECA), an NGO alliance of which Wetlands International is a member, gave a side event 'Intact terrestrial carbon stores for an effective climate deal'. We presented our views on components of a new climate deal for keeping carbon in the soils and biomass of forests & wetlands intact and out of the atmosphere. Rainforest Foundation, Global Witness, Wetlands International, Wilderness Society, FERN, EIA and HSI.
